The «Chewing the Scenery» publication was continuously developed during the course of the exhibition and appeared in three progressively reworked editions. During the course of the exhibition, the initial publication was developed and issued in a further progressively reworked and extended second edition timed to coincide with the live events in September. The third and last edition, published in late November 2011, after the exhibition in Venice was dismantled, includes additional material on the exhibition and the events.
The publication is a work in its own right and not a “documentary catalog” in the traditional sense. In keeping with a process-based working method, each edition is an as-yet incomplete whole, an ongoing enquiry—guided by the praxis of artists and authors—that opens up intricate, multifaceted perspectives on the issues in question. This process took place in close collaboration with Anna Frei and Georg Rutishauser, who were also responsible for the design and production.
All three editions of the publication feature artists' contributions from Raphaël Cuomo / Maria Iorio, Uriel Orlow and Eran Schaerf, as well as texts by Ann Cvetkovich, Mathias Danbolt, Antke Engel, Elizabeth Freeman, Patricia Purtschert, Rubia Salgado and Andrea Thal.
The third edition also includes texts on the live events in September by Mareike Bernien/Kerstin Schroedinger and Marina Lienhard / Jovita dos Santos Pinto, documentary images of the exhibition and live events, extensive reflections on Pauline Boudry / Renate Lorenz's film installation by Antke Engel and on Tim Zulauf / KMUProduktionen's installative dramatisation by Joerg Franzbecker.
